Academics

The purpose of education is to provide students with various opportunities to help them discover and refine their own individual abilities and talents. All of Keio’s schools share this vision and have developed their programs so that they can work towards this objective in ways appropriate to the age or life stage of the students. The Keio Yochisha Elementary School is also committed to this goal through its practical approach to education.

About Us

Keio Yochisha, one of the oldest private elementary schools in Japan, is celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2024. Moving forward, we hope to build on this legacy through the cooperative spirit that characterizes Keio, making history and leaving behind traditions for future generations.

  • Our History

Before the Keio Yochisha Elementary School was established, there was the “Dōji ryō” (children’s dormitory) to house students between the ages of 12 and 16. Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio, was himself blessed with four sons and five daughters. He realized that the children would need highly skilled teachers and an institution other than the Dōji ryō to be entrusted with such a great task.

  • A Message from the Headmaster

The educational philosophy here at the Keio Yochisha Elementary School is encapsulated in the lyrics of the Yochisha Anthem. When the children sing that “we will remember what Fukuzawa taught,” the values of “independence and self-respect,” they are describing the type of people we are raising them to be.

  • Our Facilities

The Keio Yochisha Elementary School has a variety of facilities to fulfill the needs of our students. There is the Jisonkan Auditorium which was built in 1964 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the school, the Science Garden which features a biotope filled with aquatic plants, and the spacious Keyaki Hall where students from two separate grades can each lunch together.

  • Health and Safety

The Keio Yochisha Elementary School puts utmost importance on the health and safety of our students so that they can enjoy a bright, happy, and healthy school experience. For our safety precautions, we have security guards watching over the school 24 hours a day. Our health program is also robust, with daily access to pediatricians and public health nurses from the Keio University Health Center who are able to treat potential injuries or illnesses.
